Internet Services - Tips for Choosing Internet Service Provider

For those who are relocating or moving from dialup to broadband internet access, choosing a broadband ISP can cause some headaches. Should you go with DSL or cable internet access? Which ISP is better? You may need to spend hours or days visiting individual ISP sites, reading detailed service plans, checking for service availability in your area. Here are some simple tips to help you choose a good ISP.

The first thing you need to find out is service availability. In the past, you might have to go to the websites of different ISPs and scan for service availability for your geographical area. This is no longer necessary as some broadband service resellers have installed sophisticated software technology. This technology allows you to compare and choose from dozens of national ISPs simply by entering your phone number or home address.

What about price? Should you pick the one with the lowest price? Before you can make an objective comparison, ask yourself: what do you do most over the internet?

If you like to play real time online games or you need to download video clips, music files, games and software frequently, connection speed should be your primary concern. In general, ISP and service plans offering higher connection speed also cost more.

For a family with more than one PC at home, the ability to set up home networking is important. If you have a large family, you may want to choose a plan offering multiple email accounts. However, this is less important these days as free email accounts can be obtained from other sources such as Yahoo and Google.

For family with children, parental control is a useful feature. You can also compare the entertainment pack which comes with high speed internet access.

Almost all broadband ISPs provide free virus protection, pop-up blockers and anti-spam software. However, high speed internet access is often connected via a static IP address which makes your computer vulnerable to hacker attacks. You should also install a good personal firewall program yourself.

Read the terms and conditions of service carefully. Do you need to sign a one-year contract? Does the ISP provide money back guarantee? You may be charged a penalty fee if you cancel the service before the contract ends. It is also important to check if the ISP provides good customer service and 24/7 technical support.

You can ask your friends which ISP they currently use. However, please bear in mind that internet connection speed is affected by many factors. For examples, DSL internet speed is affected by the distance from ISP service center and the speed of cable internet is affected by the number of people sharing the bandwidth in your neighborhood. Therefore, people from different locations may experience different connection speeds using the same ISP. Usually, you will get a better idea of actual performance by getting feedback from your neighbors than friends living in other areas.

To sum things up, although price is an important factor in choosing an ISP, you should also consider your personal need, family structure, features and terms of the service plan, and the reputation of the internet service provider. Using comparison tools provided by some broadband service resellers can also save you time and money in the selection process.

Register Your Domain Name

Advtmedia Domain Name Registration/Renewal Service: Here are some critical factors in choosing the right domain name for your business.

Reflect Your Business - Register Your Domain Name

The selection process of your domain name can be significantly more efficient and quicker if you carefully identify and take into consideration all specific attributes of your online business. Make sure your domain name reflects your business.

We also provide domain registration service and management service. We can provide you wide range of domain names like .com, .org, .in ...etc form various Registrars with a much affordable prices comparatively in the market. We also provide online support.

The Cheapest Domain Registration on the Planet

In order to launch a website you need to register (purchase) a domain name and get a company to host your website in order for it to be live. A domain is the URL, such as www.yourdomain.com. The .com is termed the extension of a domain and there are several, such as, .info, .net, .biz, .us, .org, .asia etc…

All though there are differing opinions on this topic, in the Internet Marketing world, I prefer .com, because it is the original extension, the most popular and the one most people remember and so it is perfect for branding. Of all the extensions, the .com is one of the most expensive.

Usually, a hosting company will offer you a very cheap domain registration if you buy their hosting, however, I do NOT recommend registering your domain this way. It is best to buy a domain from a registrar separate from your hosting company. There are many horror stories, where people have had problems that tie their hands when they want to transfer hosts and the domain was also registered with that host.

Domain registration with a separate registrar and then completing a quick process of pointing the nameservers to a different host is the better route.

If, Hostgator, is The Best Web Hosting Company, and the king of website hosting, then All Cheap Web is the king of domain registration. (Coupon Code - wordpress – gets you Hostgator for the 1st month for only 1 Cent)

I have researched over 40 domain registration services and on average, the cost for registering a .com domain is $9.99 per year and an additional $8.99 for private registration, which means that your name, address and other private information is blocked form public view.

Well, with All Cheap Web, .com domain registration is $6.95 and only and additional $1.95 for private registration. Plus, .info domains for $1.99. THAT IS A GREAT DEAL! So register your domains with All Cheap Web and then get hosting services from Host Gator, you won’t be sorry!

User friendly and dirt cheap All Cheap Web wins hands down!

What do you guys think? Anyone found any cheaper domain registration?

Tip Hosting

This is an interesting softwear. If your home computer is connected to the Internet via Connection Sharing or Broadband Router, you will not generally be able to access it, say, from your office.

By installing Hamachi on both computers and clicking a couple of buttons you can connect them instantly and securely. Now you can browse file shares, run remote desktop or even host a multiplayer game on one computer and join in from another. Just as if they were connected with a physical wire. Hamachi is a networking technology enabling any two computers on the Internet to talk directly to each other regardless of the presence of firewalls or address translation devices on the route between them.

Most interestingly, Hamachi enables peer-to-peer communications between two computers residing behind two different connection sharing devices. In geek language - it allows for bidirectional NAT traversal. Peer to peer connectivity becomes possible with the help of Hamachi servers that mediate the establishment of an initial contact between peers.

Once peers connect the traffic starts to flow directly between them. This not only ensures that data travels the best route possible, but it also minimizes latency (ping time) and maximizes transfer speeds. Hamachi is secure. All Hamachi communications are encrypted and authenticated using industry-standard algorithms and protocols. Nobody will be able to see what two Hamachi peers are talking about.

However what is more important, Hamachi security architecture is completely open meaning that its detailed description is available for review to anyone interested.

USB Server Shares Peripherals

Keyspan's unique USB Server.
Buy a network-ready printer, and you'll pay hundreds more than you would for a simple USB-connected one. But less-expensive USB printers and the vast variety of other USB peripherals function solely as single-computer devices.

Keyspan's USB Server is unique because it lets you share several such devices among multiple networked PCs--and without leaving any of your PCs turned on.

You connect the $130 USB Server to your network via its ethernet port. The USB Server has four USB 1.1 ports, and allows you to share multifunction devices, printers, scanners, and even input devices (mice and keyboards). External hard drives may work too, but the company says they'll perform more slowly than if attached directly to the PC.

When you connect a peripheral to the server, a small application on each networked PC will show that it's available. Click a button to connect to the server, and if the device isn't already installed, you'll receive a Windows prompt to set it up, just as if you had plugged it into the back of the PC.

I looked at a shipping USB Server and found using peripherals through it almost as easy as if they were connected to a USB port on my computer. I tried it with two PCs, a printer, and a scanner; I could print and scan at the same time, with no apparent slowdown. However, the server will not allow two systems to access the same peripheral simultaneously, so I could not queue print jobs. Keyspan says it's working on that, but most of these devices weren't meant to be shared.

If you have a stable of USB 1.1 peripherals, especially devices that aren't printers, using the USB Server can help avoid sharing conflicts.

Keyspan USB Server

Simple device is great for sharing USB peripherals in a multiple-PC home office. Price when reviewed: $130 Current prices (if available).

Alienware Further Teases Us With Powerful Area-51 Notebooks

All that pre-release hype from Alienware we heard last week led up to even more pre-release hype today, with the company unveiling its two new laptops, the Area-51 m15x and m17x. It’s calling the radical PCs “the most powerful notebooks ever created.” There’s still an air of mystery around the two laptops, but we do know that both the 15.4″ Area-51 m15x and the 17″ Area-51 m17x will be using Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processors at 2.8GHz, and will have enough graphics mojo to play 1080p video and beaucoups games. Pricing and availability still weren’t announced, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, feast your eyes on the pretty pics of these highly capable baubles from the extraterrestrials. The Slim PC By Dell

At Dell’s launch of its “Hybrid Business” strategy today, the company spent a few minutes talking about its history of developing new standards, and forcing them on the industry. One of the standards discussed: Display Port. This new interconnect, according to Dell CTO Kevin Kettler, will redefine what an LCD monitor looks like.

Future Internet

Future Internet: Duncan Campbell examines the technology that will one day bring about the “thinking Web”.

I liked the picture that is featured at the top of this article by Duncan Cambell on the future of the Internet so I republished it at the top of this post. It shows an artists conception of what our computer interface will look like in the year 2018.

Freud said a century ago that humans have an unconscious instinctual desire to return to womb. As a psychologist trained a long time ago in old school psychology, I would have to say that the woman in the picture looks like she has done exactly that. Her fetal position is also similar to that imagined for the "enslaved" humans in the movie, the Matrix immersed in their virtual reality pods. Except that the woman looks alert and working rather than vegetative.

She looks extremely comfortable. The only thing that looks like it might not be needed is her fingers at the keyboard. Hopefully by 2018 that speech recognition or even brainwave recognition will have advanced far enough to the need for repeated pressing of fingers.

New ebook called Jetbook

Ectaco, Inc., New York-based company just announced their new e-book reader called Jetbook go to compete with the recently set fire to the Amazon and Sony Reader. Slightly smaller and lighter than those two, Jetbook away from more established e-ink display technology: the use of high-resolution monochrome display, 5-inch TFT screen display. This strategy has not yet been tested, either as a step forward or back to ereader display technology. E - - Ink screen was a trend for other e-book reader, in particular due to their excellent work, and qualities, and without the background that can be read in sunlight. E-ink technology also saves a tremendous amount of energy as electricity is not necessary to have text and images on the screen.
As their sales Jetbook features comprehensive bilingual dictionaries between English, Russian and Polish, dedicated monolingual English dictionary, and supports the contents of e-books in several other languages. These are made of conventional Ectaco hand experience in the development of dictionaries, translation software and language management technology. Other useful features include a built-in MP3 player, bookmarks, automatic page turning, rotate the screen in landscape mode or portrait viewability and screen 180 degrees. Information on battery capacity and memory / storage size is not yet known.

Apple may launch iPhone Nano in Summer

First the rumor of Apple Netbook and now the Apple iPhone Nano!! Not that I dislike the rumors but don’t you think they are kinda too good to be true? Ofcourse if you disagree, you are probably not a Apple fan. But hey, I am no hard core fan either, but whenever I visit the mall near me, I simply can’t avoid going to the Apple store…the room full of innovation. Apple just makes products that are truly revolutionary (sans the price ofcourse!). Let’s come back to the point…French website Journal Du Geek reports that accordingly to their sources (who knows what) says that Steve Jobs himself will unveil the iPhone Nano in an event in summer.

LEADING IN 3D DATA-DRIVEN

Technology in schools is unquestionably a necessity if, in fact, our schools are to reflect the world around them. Our world is driven by technology of all sorts, and in all layers of society - personal, banking, entertainment, tourism, and so on. Few businesses could survive today without a heavy reliance on technology to communicate, collaborate, collect and act upon data, and produce products and services.
Therefore, technology must be heavily integrated into the learning process as well in order to best prepare the children we teach. Our students must be able to interact with technology, use it as a tool to enhance learning, and be comfortable with it so it can enable them to reach their full potential.
We have seen for years an influx of technology systems in schools in the way of computer labs, individual computers in classrooms, laptops, and other equipment. In many cases, this technology has enhanced the classroom in ways teachers were not able to do before its arrival. Technology allows educators to customise learning in great detail. It enables teachers to reach learners at a depth that would otherwise be nearly impossible. In the best cases, technology has helped teachers to make the classrooms engaged at a high level, and in a way that puts the power of technology into students’ hands. However, getting classrooms to fully capitalise on the power of technology can sometimes be a struggle. Students are typically more comfortable with technology than their teachers are. The students were born into the world of technology, while the teachers had to learn it as an afterthought. Further, teachers are incredibly busy with all they have to accomplish in the way of teaching content, assessing students’ learning of that content, and so on. So sometimes what we find is that technology takes a back seat to content, teaching strategies, and tests. Teachers may feel that they do not have time to use the technology because they don’t see it as something critical, or because the administration has already put so much other pressure on them, they feel obliged to relegate technology to a time when their “real teaching” is done.

Apple iPhone 3G

Apple iPhone 3G S
Full review: Apple iPhone 3G S

The iPhone 3G S doesn't make the same grand leap that the iPhone 3G made from the first-generation model, but the latest Apple handset is still a compelling upgrade for some users. The iPhone 3G S is faster and we appreciate the new features and extended battery life, but call quality and 3G reception still need improvement. Read the CNET review

Some Common Storage Devices

Hard Drive

The hard drive is the primary device that a computer uses to store information. The hard drive stores programs, data files, saves files, and organizes files. The hard drive is located inside the computer case. The hard drive, magnetically stores data on stacks of rotating disks called platters.

A computer system unit contains many parts.

Motherboard - The motherboard is the main circuit board of a microcomputer. It is also known as the mainboard or system board.

CPU - The CPU is the central electronic chip that determines the processing power of the computer.

Memory - Memory is the part of the computer that temporarily stores applications, documents, and stem operating information.

Bus - A bus is an electronic line that allows 1s and 0s to move from one place to another.

Expansion Slots - Expansions slots appear on the motherboard. They are sockets into which adapters are connected.

Ports and Connectors - A port is a connector located on the motherboard or on a separate adapter.

Bays - A bay is a space inside the computer case where a hard drive, floppy drive or CD-ROM drive sits

Power Supply - A power supply changes normal household electricity into electricity that a computer can use.

Sound Components - A sound card lets a computer play and record high quality sound.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Does all of the work for the computer

  1. Does all of the mathematics, mainly addition
  2. Does all the logical comparisons of values
  3. Directs the flow of data in a computer
  4. Controls the operation of the parts of the computer

Today, all CPUs are microprocessors

  1. A microprocessor is a complete computer on a silicon chip
  2. A microprocessor does all of the functions of a computer
    • stores data and instructions waiting to be used
    • follows changeable instructions
    • does input, processing, and output

Laser printers (non-impact printer)

  • How the laser printer produces an image
    • A laser or LEDs make dots on a light sensitive drum
    • Toner (very tiny particles of plastic) stick to the drum where the dots where made
    • Paper is pressed against the drum and the toner is placed on the paper
    • The paper is heated and the toner melts into the paper
  • Produces the highest quality printout
  • For black and white printouts, very low cost per page
  • Printout is permanent
  • Color laser printers are still fairly expensive ($3,000 to $10,000)

Displays are flat and use plasma, LCD, active-matrix, or some other technology.

  • Monitors used to be called Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) because of the picture tube, which is a large vacuum tube.
  • A monitor or display produce a soft copy. When the device is turned off the information goes away.
  • Monitors are slowly being replaced by flat panel displays.

CD-ROM/DVD-ROM

  • Can be used to put both sound and images into a computer
  • Use a laser to read a Compact Disk (CD) or a DVD disk

Microphone

  • Used to put sound into a computer
  • Need sound recording software

Digital Camera

  • Used to take electronic pictures of an object
  • The pictures taken by a digital camera can be used directly by a computer

To enable high speed testing, the silicon chip is bonded to a printed circuit board (PCB) with low loss RF connectors. The PCB is also designed for DC bias control of MZMs and MUX/DEMUX phase tuning (see Fig. 2). In the high-speed testing, the differential RF signals from a pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) generator with [231-1] pattern length are amplified using a commercially available dual-output driver. The amplified single-ended output of 3.2 Vpp (6.4 Vpp differential) is combined with 2VDC using a bias Tee to ensure reverse bias operation for the entire AC voltage swing. The MZI modulators are biased at quadrature for all the high-speed measurements.

Before RF characterization, we tested the optical spectra of the integrated chip. We obtained relatively good channel uniformity (<1.5>25 dB). For the data transmission experiment, we measured the eye diagram one channel at a time. Figure 3 shows the 25 Gbps eye diagrams of all eight channels. We see from Fig. 3 that all channels show similar performance. Clear open eyes at 25 Gbps suggest that the single chip is capable of transmitting data at an aggregate bandwidth of 200 Gbps.
